Lavender, Red Clover and the Pollinators They Support

Pollination is one of the most important relationships in the garden. The shape, colour, scent and structure of a flower all influence which insects visit it, and in turn, how successfully that plant reproduces.
Lavender and red clover are two excellent examples. Both are valuable perennial plants for wildlife-friendly planting schemes, but each has evolved characteristics that appeal to a different type of bee.
Lavender and the Honeybee
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a dependable and highly attractive perennial that brings structure, fragrance and seasonal interest to a planting scheme.
Its purple-blue flower spikes are particularly attractive to honeybees (Apis mellifera), which are able to see blue and ultraviolet wavelengths especially well. Lavender’s strong fragrance and abundant nectar make the flowers easy for bees to locate, while its summer flowering period provides a valuable food source when pollinators are at their most active.
From a design perspective, lavender works beautifully in sunny borders, herb gardens and alongside paths. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a practical evergreen choice for edging and low planting.
Its value, however, extends far beyond appearance. A generous planting of lavender can become a busy feeding ground for bees and other beneficial insects, bringing movement and life into the garden.

How lavender is pollinated
When a honeybee lands on a lavender flower to collect nectar, its body brushes against the anthers, picking up grains of pollen.
As the bee moves between flowers, some of that pollen is transferred onto the stigma of another flower. The pollen then germinates and grows a pollen tube down towards the ovary, where the ovules are fertilised.
Seeds can then develop, completing the plant’s reproductive cycle.
It is a simple process, but one that demonstrates the remarkable relationship between flowering plants and their pollinators.
Red Clover and the Bumblebee
Red clover (Trifolium pratense) offers a slightly different pollination story.
This perennial wildflower depends particularly on long-tongued bumblebees, including species such as Bombus terrestris. Its rounded pink-purple flower heads are made up of many tubular florets, with nectar positioned relatively deep within each one.
This means that not every insect can access the reward easily. Bumblebees are particularly well suited to the task, using their strength and feeding apparatus to reach into the flowers.
Red clover is therefore an excellent choice for wildlife meadows, informal lawns and naturalistic planting schemes. As well as providing nectar and pollen for insects, it belongs to the legume family and can fix nitrogen in the soil, helping to improve fertility and support surrounding plants.

How red clover is pollinated
As a bumblebee pushes into a red clover floret in search of nectar, pollen is deposited onto its body.
When the bee visits another flower, some of this pollen reaches the sticky stigma. A pollen tube then grows down through the style towards the ovary, allowing the male reproductive cell to reach and fertilise the ovule.
Seeds subsequently develop, allowing the plant to reproduce.
From Flower to Seed
Although lavender and red clover attract different pollinators, the basic process of insect pollination is the same:

Designing With Pollinators in Mind
Lavender and red clover demonstrate how closely flower form and pollinator behaviour are connected.
Lavender’s fragrance, visible flower spikes and accessible nectar make it particularly attractive to honeybees and well suited to more structured or formal planting schemes.
Red clover, by contrast, has deeper tubular flowers that favour bumblebees and works naturally within meadows, informal lawns and wildlife-focused landscapes.
Using both plants within a garden can therefore provide more than visual variety.
It creates different feeding opportunities for different pollinators, extending the ecological value of the planting.
Good planting design is not simply about how plants look alongside one another.

By considering the insects that rely on them, we can create landscapes that are attractive, functional and alive — places where planting supports the wider ecosystem as beautifully as it supports the design.
