This landscape design proposal seeks to harmonise the raw, untamed beauty of the countryside with the sophisticated, functional needs of a multi-generational family. The vision is a ‘modern-shabby chic’ sanctuary:

A space that feels lived-in and timeless, utilising a curated palette of cream, deep forest greens, and oxidised rusty reds.

The Arrival: A Naturalistic Threshold

Your journey begins at the entrance, where a vast expanse of Cotswold 10mm self-bind gravel provides a crisp, modern foundation that remains true to the rural vernacular.

This space avoids the austerity of a standard driveway; instead, it is softened by luscious, billowing herbaceous borders that spill over the edges, blurring the line between architecture and meadow.

We have carefully preserved existing trees, augmenting them with new native specimens that bolster local biodiversity, ensuring the entrance feels like a natural extension of the surrounding landscape rather than an imposition upon it.

The Meandering Path: A Journey of Texture

As you depart the drive to the south west, the garden unfolds through a winding, organic path system designed for discovery. Initially, the cream gravel gives way to a tactile herringbone-laid reclaimed clay brick path.

Each section is discreetly edged in cream limestone, creating a rhythmic transition from the wilder, peripheral meadow-like borders to the more composed areas of the garden.

Along this route, we have cleverly integrated a sunken trampoline—hidden enough to maintain the aesthetic calm of the garden, yet perfectly positioned for parents to supervise from the dining area, ensuring the garden remains a safe, playful domain for the children.

The Dining Pavilion: Where Modernity Meets Farmhouse Charm

The path pauses at the heart of the social garden: a private dining sanctuary for up to 12 guests.

Here, a circular cream limestone patio acts as the anchor, featuring an integrated water feature that draws from the natural swimming pool, whispering beneath the paving to provide a soothing acoustic backdrop into the child safe corten steel babbling bowl.

The dining area is sheltered by an open-sided, farmhouse-style structure featuring traditional, hand-fired rusty red tiles. Adjoining this is a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and grill, framed by architectural pillars draped in evergreen climbers. These act as a living screen, offering total seclusion from the driveway and neighbouring properties without creating the clinical feel of a fence.

Water and Play: The Natural Oasis

To the right of the path, the garden transitions into a natural swimming pool, designed to feel as though it has been carved by the landscape. Large, smooth boulders sourced from the riverbank frame the water’s edge, sitting peacefully beneath the canopy of an established tree. Aquatic plants filter the water naturally, ensuring it remains crystal clear and inviting.

Opposite this, we have installed a professionally trained willow arbor—a magical, "hidden-in-plain-sight" play space for the children that offers direct, controlled access to the riverbank, turning the natural watercourse into an engaging, interactive feature of the estate.

The Corten Statement: A Social Hearth

Beyond the formal and play zones, the path leads to a striking Corten steel pergola. This structure is a piece of industrial art, its rusty-red patina perfectly complementing our colour scheme. Within this sculptural frame sits a social fire pit area, featuring deep cedar benches, artisanal cushions, and overhead festoon lighting. It is a space designed for the cool evenings

A safe, secluded harbour that feels both grounded and high-end, utilising the same herringbone brickwork underfoot to maintain a cohesive design language.

The Orchard and Kitchen Garden: Productive Beauty

Heading north, the garden offers a sense of bounty. A natural orchard of low-growing fruit trees provides a dual purpose: it discreetly screens the septic tank and neighboring sightlines while providing a harvest for the family and maintaining a sensible growing height avoiding interference with the power lines above.

Further east, the kitchen garden is treated with a loose, informal hand; rather than rigid, geometric rows, the planting is encouraged to grow in a soft, abundant fashion, blending vegetables and herbs with ornamental flowers.

This area flows seamlessly toward the utility shed, where low-bearing hedges and sweeping herbaceous borders guide you gently back toward the driveway.

The Final Loop: A Cohesive Landscape

To complete the circuit, a western route leads to a generous, naturalistic lawn and sheltered arbor designed as a secondary play space for the family.

The width of the paths and the driveway has been calculated to allow for continuous, safe loops—an endless track for children to cycle or play.

Throughout the entire estate, the planting scheme of ornamental grasses, evergreen foliage, and pops of cream and rusty red flowers ensures that the garden is not only low-maintenance but visually stunning and child friendly in every season, offering a refined, "shabby-chic" elegance that is perfectly tailored to the family's lifestyle.
