2ND APRIL 2023

NERD WORD: Ephemerals, in botany, any short-lived plant, usually one that has one or more generations per year, growing only during favourable periods (as when adequate moisture is available) and passing the unfavourable periods in the form of seeds.

This weekend I had an initial consultation to assess the grounds of a newly bought property.

This involves meeting with the client and walking around the grounds, identifying and assessing any horticultural problems and concerns. To provide the appropriate advice written into a mapped planned proposal to further the development and restoration of the garden.

Although the grounds were flooded and muddy, soaking shoes right through to the sock and embankments were being washed away by the by the sheer force of the flowing river. There were two beauties that stood elegantly even through nearly a year of neglect on the garden.

Clematis armandi & Magnolia stellata 'White'

Two timeless winter flowerings white beauties. Lighting up the garden with an ocean of flowers.

Clematis armandi

Clematis armandii is a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, native to China. It is a vigorous, evergreen climber with glossy, leathery leaves and fragrant white flowers. It is commonly grown in gardens and valued for its ornamental qualities.

How to prune clematis armandi

To prune Clematis Armandii, it is best to wait until after it has finished flowering. Then, remove any dead or damaged wood and cut back any overgrown stems to shape the plant. Avoid cutting back too much, as this may affect the plant's ability to bloom the following year.

How to feed clematis armandi

Clematis armandii prefers well-draining soil and should be fertilized in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Use a slow-release fertilizer that is high in phosphorus to promote healthy root growth and encourage blooming. Water the plant deeply once or twice a week during the growing season, and avoid over-watering as this can lead to root rot.

What is the best growing locations for clematis armandi

Clematis armandii grows best in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade. It is also important to provide support for the vine to climb, such as a trellis or fence.

Magnolia stellata 'White'

Magnolia stellata 'White' is a deciduous shrub/small tree that is native to Japan. It produces beautiful, fragrant, white flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge. The plant prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Magnolia stellata 'White' can grow up to 10 feet tall and wide and is a popular choice for gardens and landscapes.

How to prune Magnolia stellata 'White'

To prune Magnolia stellata 'White', it's best to wait until after it has finished flowering. Then, you can remove any dead or damaged branches, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other. You can also selectively prune back any branches that are getting too long or are out of shape. However, be careful not to remove too much of the tree at once, as this can cause stress and affect its overall health.

How to feed Magnolia stellata 'White'

Magnolia stellata 'White' prefers a well-draining soil and should be watered regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer, and avoid fertilizing after mid-summer to prevent new growth from being damaged by frost. You can also add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Why is your trees producing suckers

Trees produce suckers as a survival mechanism to replace damaged or lost branches, or to spread their root system in search of nutrients and water.

What to do when Magnolia stellata 'White' produces suckers If you want to prevent Magnolia stellata 'White' from producing suckers, you can prune them off as soon as you see them using a sharp and clean pair of pruning shears. Make sure to cut them as close to the base as possible to avoid leaving any stubs. Additionally, make sure to provide the tree with proper care, such as regular watering and fertilization, to minimize the likelihood of sucker growth.

Whats the best location to plant Magnolia stellata 'White

Magnolia stellata 'White' prefers to be planted in a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining, acidic soil. It also benefits from protection from strong winds. Consider planting it in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, and avoid planting it in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
